3 Curly Kid Friendly Product Lines

As a mom of twins who both have super long curly hair, it has been important to me from the start to use products that were not only hydrating and followed the CG method, but were also kid friendly. Parents of curly kids know, wash day isn’t always fun for both kids and parents. Anything that we can do to help ease the process we are game, and that includes finding product lines that don’t make matters worse. As a mom of two curly kids myself I have had my fair share of testing out various product lines geared towards curly kids, as well as trying out product lines that I use on myself that I have deemed safe enough for their delicate strands.

I wanted to be fair in my review and let you all know that although these aren’t the only kid friendly product lines available, these are the top three that I have personally tried. So without further explanation, let’s get into it!

  1. SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Kids 2-n-1 Curl & Shine Shampoo & Conditioner and Curling Butter Cream
  • When I first started out on my natural hair journey (pre curly twins) SheaMoisture was one of the very first product lines that I ever fell in love with! I knew right from the start that I wanted to work my way up to truly following the CG Method so knowing they didn’t include harsh ingredients such as Parabens, Sulfates, Silicones, Phthalates, or Mineral Oil was important to me. After I had Ayson and Ayva I wanted to look for products made for kids that followed the same rules. Why would I be willing to use harsh chemicals on them if I wasn’t willing to use them on myself? Especially considering the fact that their curls were fresh, new, and delicate! I found immediate comfort in knowing that a product line that I had grown to love and trust took the time to create products that were safe enough to use on children. I also loved the fact that I could reduce the amount of time that I spent with washing and conditioning by using the 2-n-1 option and following that up with 1 styler prior to styling their hair for the week. The Coconut & Hibiscus Kids line has the same great scent, slip, and moisture as the original.
  • SheaMoisture has a few other kid specific product lines including the Kids Mango & Carrot, Baby Olive & Marula Shampoo and Body Wash, Raw Shea Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby wash and Shampoo, and Baby Manuka Honey Provence Lavender with Shea Butter and Ylang Ylang nighttime shampoo bath milk.
  • I want to be sure to add that although I started my curly kids out with the Coconut & Hibiscus kids line, I was able to quickly transition them over to the Coconut & Hibiscus Adult line around 2 years old and yield the same great results.
  • SheaMoisture Kids and Baby is available on their website (sheamoisture.com) as well as select Ulta, Target, and Walmart stores.

2. Mixed Chicks

  • I truly fell in love with the Mixed Chicks Kids line, especially for my daughter who has a looser curl pattern. What I love most about the Kids line from Mixed Chicks is that all of their products are fragrance and dye free for our curly kids who are more sensitive to added fragrances and dye.
    • Shampoo – leaves hair soft and helps to manage the tangles prior to conditioning and detangling
    • Conditioner – provides great slip when detangling and leaves hair soft
    • Leave-In Conditioner – doesn’t weigh their soft curls down
    • Tangle Tamer – used as a styler and curl refresher for next day and beyond curls
  • I loved the fact that I could use this line on both kids despite their difference in hair texture. The Leave-In conditioner was light enough to not weigh down my daughter’s curls but moisturizing enough so that my son’s braids stayed hydrated throughout the week. I didn’t stick with this line very long due to the lack in styler available as the Tangle Tamer wasn’t a good styling option for them and I would always have to include another product from another line that never seemed to mix very well.

3. As I Am Born Curly Shampoo and Argan Leave-In Conditioner & Detangler

  • Early on in my kids life when I would consider myself as a product junkie and more inclined to test out various product lines I stumbled across the As I Am Born Curly line by the well known As I Am company. This product line has 7 products available including:
    • Aloe Shampoo
    • Avocado Shea Cowash
    • Argan Leave-In Conditioner & Detangler
    • Argan Curl Defining Jelly
    • Rosemary Vanilla Twist Defining Smoothie
    • Nourshing Hair & Body Oil
    • Shea & Cocoa Butter Balm
  • Seeing as my curly kids have two different hair textures and thus can require different products at times, I appreciated the options that were provided to me with this line. For my son, I could use the shampoo, leave-in & detangler followed by the smoothie for his coarser texture curls prior to styling his hair in braids. For my daughter I could cowash, apply the leave-in detangler and follow that up with the defining jelly for her Type 3 curls prior to styling her hair in a wash and go.
  • As I am Born Curly is available on their website (asiamnaturally.com) as well as select Target and Walmart stores.

Now that my curly kids are older I have found a few regular product lines that I love using on them both. The best part is, since they have been using healthy natural ingredients from the beginning it wasn’t hard to transition to adult lines that offered the same benefits. No matter what line you choose, make sure you are reading not only the ingredients but also the instructions to ensure that you are using the products as recommended for best results. What kid friendly product lines have you discovered? Let me know in the comments below.
